I am certain I am the fact. Say it and it is done — no process, no condition.

The same batch of bricks, the same bag of cement. Lay them into a straight wall and the whole weight sits on the base; a strong wind starts a crack at the top. Lay the very same bricks into an arch and each brick presses against its neighbours, the load runs along the curve down into both feet — and the bricks carry more than they ever could lying flat. Not one brick swapped, not one extra bag of cement: what changed is the arrangement, and with it the direction the load travels. Structure science says exactly this: function is not given by the material, it is given by the structure. People are the same batch of bricks: line them up straight and the weakest one snaps first; lean them into an arch and the weakest one is held by both neighbours and holds. So when a team looks broken, don't rush to swap people — first ask whether this lot was laid as a wall or as an arch.

A man who keeps saying 'I'm the reasonable one' is usually the one most afraid of being called unreasonable. A man who keeps saying 'money doesn't matter' usually has a scale inside with only money left on it. What is truly stable never needs announcing: breathing needs no reminder, a heartbeat needs no emphasis, the sun does not declare every morning that it will rise. Cognitive-structure theory reads people by structure, not by labels: the label is what he pastes on for you to see; the sentence he repeats is what leaks out of him. Listen for what he repeats, not for what he says. The place he repeats is the thinnest board in his structure — knock there and it sounds hollow.

A houseplant in its second year starts to yellow; more water and more fertiliser change nothing. Lift it out of the pot and the roots have wound themselves into a tight coil along the wall, the soil is all but gone, and the water you pour runs straight down the gaps and out. What it needs is not more water: cut a ring of old roots away, move it to a larger pot, add fresh soil. Cutting hurts; not cutting lets the roots strangle themselves. Phoenix theory says exactly this: completeness is a dead ring, incompleteness is a living one. Roots that fill every inch, leaving not one gap, look the most flourishing and have already stopped growing. People are the same — a schedule packed to the last second, no room for one idle sentence, is not efficiency; the roots have wound themselves shut. Cut yourself a ring and leave an empty pot now and then: that is not loss, it is room for the next growth.

In 1946 the statistician Joseph Berkson noticed something odd: among hospital inpatients, two diseases looked mutually exclusive — catch one and you seemed less likely to catch the other. Back in the general population, the two were either unrelated or positively correlated. Disease does not repel disease because you were admitted; the problem is the word 'admitted'. A person is in hospital because of disease A, and also because of disease B — being admitted is the shared result of both. Once you select people by a shared result, a relationship grows out of thin air between that result's two causes. Projection-is-truth says exactly this: you think you are looking at a relationship, but you are looking at your sieve. A sieve never knocks; it hides inside the sentence you used to pick the sample. Before you believe any 'this kind of person is more likely to...', ask: how did this group get in?

In May 1919 two British expeditions went to West Africa and Brazil to watch a total solar eclipse. Einstein's general relativity predicted starlight would bend about 1.75 arc-seconds as it passed the sun; Newtonian gravity gave roughly half that. The two numbers disagreed, so the eclipse could settle it — and the result leaned toward Einstein. Popper kept telling this story, and what interested him was not that relativity won, but that on that day relativity could have lost. A claim that can never lose says nothing: the patient is persuaded, so it is right; the patient resists, so it is also right ('the resistance proves the problem is deep in the unconscious'). Explain everything, and you have said nothing. Coupling verification is exactly this cut: write down what fact would prove me wrong, then look at the data. If you cannot write the second sentence, the first one is not yet a claim — it is a posture.

A pass mark of 60, blood pressure 140/90, a BMI of 24, 'youth' up to 35 — not one of these numbers comes from the world itself. The world gives continuous things: scores from 0 to 100, blood pressure from low to high, age ticking up day by day. We drew the lines, and only then were pass/fail, high/low born. Where you draw the line decides what you will see: in 1983 Jacob Cohen did the arithmetic — split a continuous variable at its median and the correlation between the two halves falls on average to about 0.80 of what it was. You spend the effort of 100 people and buy the information of roughly 64. Structure science says: structure first, conclusion after; that line is part of the structure, not part of the world. Next time you read 'this kind of person is more likely to X', find the line first — where is it drawn, who drew it, and does the conclusion survive if the cut moves from 10k to 15k?

In the early 2000s someone compared the antidepressant trials registered with US regulators against the published literature, and the two did not match: of the trials with negative results, a good share were never published at all, and of the rest, quite a few were written up as positive. So what the public could read was almost uniformly 'it works'. The problem was not fraud; it was a default rule — once a study is done, the author may write up the flattering version, submit the flattering version, and let the ugly one sink into a drawer. That is publication bias, and it dragged psychology and medicine into the replication crisis. The fix is clumsy but hard: pre-registration — before touching the data, write down what you will test, how you will analyse it, what counts as success and what counts as failure, then archive it and make it public. It does not change the data; it changes the researcher's situation: the road of picking a pretty conclusion afterwards is closed. Cognitive-structure theory reads it this way: people are not unwilling to be honest — the structure permits them not to be. To make yourself honest, don't rely on resolve; change the structure — put the words before the data.
